Intent
Our art curriculum aims to foster children’s appreciation of visual art, inspire and challenge them to express themselves artistically and to believe that they are capable of producing art that will be valued and appreciated. We aim to equip them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. We recognise that art can be a powerful and very communicative tool for people with Special Educational Needs which stimulates both creativity and imagination. We believe that children should feel that the goal of being an artist is something that they can achieve and that it’s important to expose them to artists from a range of backgrounds and cultures.
We want children to leave us being confident in a range of skills including drawing, painting, print-making, collage and sculpture as well as being able to talk about a range of notable artists and artworks.
Our curriculum ensures that learning is embedded and revisited by first teaching the skills of drawing in EYFS, building and expanding upon these in Year 1 and then using drawing as a skill to apply to different mediums in Year 2 e.g. using tools to make marks in clay and drawing with ink on textiles.
We recognise the importance of building and challenging children’s schemas and, through a carefully planned curriculum, we aim to challenge children’s understanding of forms e.g. exposing children to sculpture that is not 3D and printing that is achieved by drawing.
