Computing
Intent
Our Computing curriculum at Parkgate Infants and Nursery School aims to ensure that all children are provided with a high-quality education in computing, one which provides access to an ever changing and expanding digital world. Technology is everywhere and will play a pivotal part in students' lives. Therefore, we want to model and educate our pupils on how to use technology positively, responsibly and safely.
Our computing curriculum focuses on a progression of skills in digital literacy, computer science, information technology and online safety; ensuring that our children become competent in safely using, as well as understanding, technology. Our curriculum is designed with our school’s curriculum drivers in mind and is planned in such a way that learning is revisited through the years, enabling learning to be embedded. For example, EYFS have the opportunities through their enhanced provision to experience different computing-based resources, from walkie-talkies, iPads, Bee-Bots and laptops. Year 1 learn how to move a robot by programming a Bee-Bot, year 2 revisit these skills and are then taught algorithms, they then use Blue-Bots and move the robots through Bluetooth.
Our curriculum is broad and balanced, allowing pupils to gain a deep understanding and apply their knowledge creatively; which will in turn help our pupils become skillful computer scientists and responsible digital citizens. We recognise that the best prevention for a lot of issues we currently see with technology/social media is through education. Our children will be taught to use technology responsibly and carefully, being mindful of how their behaviour, words and actions can affect others.
Our intention is that computing also supports children’s creativity through cross-curricular learning, in order to engage children and enrich their experiences in school. We want the use of technology to support learning across the entire curriculum and to ensure that our curriculum is accessible to every child.
