Science
Intent
Our Science curriculum at Parkgate Infants and Nursery aims to develop children’s curiosity, knowledge and understanding of the world around them by providing children with opportunities to interact with complex scientific concepts.
The curriculum encompasses our school drivers and aim to:
- Cultivate an environment where children are encouraged to learn through tangible interactions with the world around them.
- Encourage pupils to become effective communicators by providing children with opportunities to use the language needed to discuss the big ideas in Science.
- Inspire children to see themselves as scientists by building on the knowledge and skills they need to develop, design and conduct investigations that test their enquires. This enables them to actively put the school motto of ‘Anything is Possible’ into practice.
- Further develop children’s understanding of the relevance and the global impact of scientific ideas.
The curriculum has been built to provide opportunities to all children to practice various scientific enquires such as research, fair testing, comparative observations over time, analysis of outcome and classifying through grouping. These are the necessary skills children need to develop and test their understanding of the world.
The curriculum builds on children’s exploration of the world around them from EYFS through to KS1. This is through opportunities to expand on prior learning and developing their schemas, for example in EYFS children learn about the life cycle of a frog by
observing frogspawn as well as observing chicks hatching from eggs. They develop on this further in KS1 by exploring the physical features than enable animals to survive and the suitability of animals in various habitats. Scientific concepts are revisited
through repeating topics across the year groups, building on prior learning as well as challenging misconceptions e.g. all seeds need sunlight to germinate when exploring plants and living things.
The curriculum is focused around developing skills needed to work scientifically with opportunities to practice skills linked to subjects such as Mathematics, English and PSHE.
